UN Day celebrations at UNDP South Africa, 2006

UNDP in South Africa celebrated UN Day on 24 October 2006, at a reception hosted by the Government of South Africa to mark the signing of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for South Africa for 2007-2010.

The Government of South Africa, represented by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Susan van der Merwe, and the UN System in the country, led by UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Scholastica Kimaryo, signed the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) for South Africa for 2007-2010, in a ceremony at the Diplomatic Guest House in Pretoria, South Africa.

The ceremonial signing, symbolically timed with the 61st commemoration of UN Day, is an important milestone in the UN System's partnership with the Government of South Africa, to support the development goals of the South African people.

Media coverage of the UN Day signing ceremony was primarily broadcast-oriented.

SABC Radio stations carried the ceremony during their news bulletins on most of their 24 national radio stations which cover the 11 national languages of the country.

The national daily, The Citizen carried a prominent photograph of the Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs accompanied by a caption. In the days prior to the event, another national daily, The Star, featured an article describing the UNDAF's objectives.
