Budget expected to focus on job creation

Cape Town, 23 February, 2011.- Jobs, infrastructure development and small and medium enterprise (SMEs) promotion are likely to form the key focus of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan's Budget Speech today.  When Gordhan delivers his Budget Speech at 2pm, he is likely to be in a buoyant mood, with the economy having grown 4.4% in the fourth quarter, unemployment having shrunk slightly from 25.3 percent to 24 percent in the final quarter and with an I-Net Bridge poll revealing that economists believe the deficit will narrow from 6.7 percent to 5.3 percent.  However, with the country still laying claim to one of the highest unemployment rates in the world, Gordhan is expected to detail measures to help create more jobs.

SA-Spain hold successful talks

 

Pretoria, 8 February 2011- South Africa and Spain are committed to facing mutual challenges together, International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) Deputy Minister Marius Fransman said on Wednesday at the end of a two-day Annual Bilateral Consultation between the two countries. "We had fruitful talks ... we are ready to take up the challenges facing us," Fransman said.

International Anti-corruption Day

 Message of the Secretary-General for 2010:  Corruption is a threat to development, democracy and stability.  It distorts markets, curbs economic growth and discourages foreign investment.  It erodes public services and trust in officials.  And it contributes to environmental damage and endangers public health by enabling the illegal dumping of hazardous waste and the production and distribution of counterfeit medicines.

KZN tackles education challenges

 

Pretoria, 8 February 2011- Strengthening the quality of education and improving learner performance will be the focus during KwaZulu-Natal's Education Summit, where solutions will hopefully be penned for the challenges facing education in that province.  The summit, which starts on 11 February 2011 at Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, aims to find workable steps in the department's quest to provide quality education to all learners.

African countries, emerging economies explore development breakthrough

 

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Delegates from African countries, China and other emerging economies -- including Vietnam– convene from 1 to November to explore some of the most successful development experiences in the South and examine how to improve policies that sustain high growth and reduce poverty.
 
Co-hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the International Poverty Reduction Center in China (IPRCC) and the Ethiopian Government, the Africa-China Poverty Reduction and Development Conference will discuss policies and institutions that have contributed to advance development in China and other developing countries.
