UNDP supports MDG process in South Africa

Pretoria, March 15 2010.

UNDP is supporting the process of MDG reporting for South Africa for 2010. The focus is on domestication of the targets and indicators. For this purpose a number of stakeholder workshops are being held to introduce the methodology of the MDG domestication process and UNDP is a key partner to this exercise along with Statistics South Africa.

In order to address the fault lines of the past, the 2010 Country Report process was designed to be widely consultative. The process has involved the Government partnering with a variety of stakeholders on how to achieve domestication of MDGs in the country in a way that reflects local context by ensuring that globally designed targets and indicators are in line with the local reality. The objective of the MDGR process is to encourage stakeholder (including civil society) engagement and participation in the MDGR preparation process thereby promoting country ownership of the process and the report. One of the key objectives of the MDGR process in South Africa has also been to strengthen capacity through promoting partnership among stakeholders in MDG preparation, monitoring and evaluation, harmonizing of data sources and databases. It is also an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss the development gains till 2015, identify local best practices and emerging challenges, review and refine MDG indicators and their targets with a view to expanding and influencing policy discourse.
