Who we are & What we do

The United Nations Development Programme supports national processes to accelerate the progress of human development with a view to eradicating poverty through development, equitable and sustained economic growth, and capacity development. This means that all UNDP policy advice, technical support, advocacy, and contributions to strengthening coherence in global development must be aimed at one end result: real improvements in people's lives and in the choices and opportunities open to them. Central to the human development approach is the concept of human empowerment, which, in addition to income, treats access to education and health care, freedom of expression, the rule of law, respect for diversity, protection from violence, and the preservation of the environment as essential dimensions of human development and well-being.

UNDP's Mandate

As the UN's global development organization, UNDP has a normative global mission, as a pro-poor development agency, to promote human rights, gender and the MDGs. As a cornerstone of its work, UNDP connects partner countries to knowledge, experience and resource networks that build capacity for pro-poor growth and human development. Further, as part of the UN Reforms process, UNDP has a mandate to lead the UN in system-wide coordination.

UNDP IN SOUTH AFRICA

UNDP South Africa is a centre of development excellence and partner of choice in promoting the achievement of Vision 2014, the Millennium Development Goals and beyond.

Donors & Partners

UNDP's support for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) puts partnership at the centre of all aspects of our work. Our partners include developing country governments, donors, the United Nations system, international financial institutions, the private sector, foundations and civil society organizations and regions and local authorities.
UNDP's bilateral development partners have made strong endorsements to help poorer countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, and play a crucial role in promoting and financing strategies that will enhance the capacity of developing countries to attain the MDGs.

To increase its development effectiveness, UNDP is strengthening its partnerships with the Development Assistance Committe (DAC) of OECD, collaborating with the members of the DAC to promote the MDGs at the global, regional and country level.
Donors not only provide funding to finance UNDP's activities on the ground, but they help promote the strategies needed to accomplish the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

Role of UNDP in the UN System

As part of its mandate, UNDP has a key co-ordinating role in the United Nations Development Group (UNDG).

UNDP is helping to reinforce joint action on development in such forums as the Economic and Social Council and the General Assembly of the United Nations. Over the past years it has played an important role in fostering coordination in summits such as Financing for Development 2002 and the World Summit on Sustainable Development 2002.
