Climate Change Conference of Parties (CoP 17), 28 November – 9 December 2011, Durban, South Africa: The annual Conference of the Parties (COP) to assess progress in dealing with climate change and negotiations for an instrument for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions will be taking place in Durban, South Africa. The conference takes place on the backdrop of successful negotiations that took place in Cancun Mexico last year. It widely expected that the conference in South will successful lead to the finalization of a legally binding instrument and finalizations on the operationalization of the Green Climate Fund. Thousands of people are expected to take part in the conference.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) South Africa as a key strategic partner for the South African government is expected to play a key role in supporting the government to host a successful conference. An inter-agency programme of support has been developed in consultation with the government and other United Nations Agencies In South Africa focusing on advocacy, communication, stakeholder mobilization, capacity building and knowledge sharing. A variety of short and long-term high-level activities will be conducted drawing on the South Africa United Nations Country Team’s international knowledge, experience and expertise.
